Charleena Chavon Lyles was born in 1987, and was raised in Seattle, Washington. She had a tough childhood, but did her best to provide a loving household for her four children, one of whom had Down Syndrome.

Early in her adult life, Charleena experienced homelessness for several years. Through the help of the THRIVE program, which gives assistance to homeless persons in need through training and placement, Charleena found work at a coffee company, and was able to secure stable housing.

Charleena struggled with depression, and got help through therapy and counseling. She fretted about her housing situation, as she reported to family members that she didn't want her children around the drugs she saw in their apartment complex. She intended to find them a safer place to live.

She was expecting her fifth child when she was killed by police in 2017.
